Marty the vigilant rebel guard by SteinWill Marty the vigilant rebel guard by SteinWill
This is a return gift for my friend :iconhawleym: who's been incredible helpful with helping with the comic layout and stuff for the next guerrilla comic I'm working on
so when he asked for a simple request of drawing his character Marty [link] as a rebel I jumped to the suggestion. however he didn't spesify anything, so I had great fun drawing Marty as a lazy slob taking a nap when he should be on guard duty

the lineart is actually a few months old but recently after I got to know my new frustrating skilled friend *Doctor-Online I found the inspiration to try go beyond what I've usually done and I'm glad I did so.
the background was a pain to do but totally worth it now after I figured out how to shade differntly.
I didn't manage the background too look that muhc like a jungle but I'll try harder at that next time ^^

There We go! Thats the kinda work i've been waiting for!. Spare no detail and give a scene that fully rendered.

Starting at the character I think the pose is excellent. His posture is relaxed and laid back. The rifle is slumped into his shoulder , his head is back and feet kinda sprawled. The posture is clear and concise , speaking that the character is indeed fast asleep on duty. There is also detail on the characters clothing that can be easily taken for granite. The gun belt around his thigh has so much detail into it with its added buckles and folds . The belt looks convincing too. Looking at the boots i see a defined structure and design with the keels and treads. The Rife has some good detail as well with the barrel and forward grip. All of this adds so much to the scene . Some things can be improved upon such as the position of the one leg, I feel like it needs a slight adjustment in positioning. Somehow it doesn't look like its following the contour of the ground. The other thought is on the folds. Tension seems to be lacking in certain areas.

The background is actually what makes the piece. You put allot of effort into the scenery to make a realistic presentation. The lighting is am ambitious effort and greatly improves the scene . Another good effect is the grass overlapping the character. By doing this you verify that the character is situated on the environment. The one thing I can say is don't be afraid to add more shadows underneath the character. Keep it up Stein!

I have to say this piece has some pretty good detal into it.Including the fact that it's a jungle or forset area that's pretty amazing.Other thing I seen in his picture the rebel soldier sleeping under the tree.

To me that's pretty nice, but I hope his officer doesn't kill him for sleeping on the job.Haha anyway for this picture it has alot of wonderful design into it.In all technique for this is amazing, and the three are outstanding.Just one thing that made me look at this and fav it was the fact the guy is sleeping in a warzone. That is funny to me.

Anyway you did great with this picture.Amazing job.

The only thing that I see at first glance is the inconsistency of linework and shading between the character and the background. This can be remedied by making the outlines of the character either thinner or more transparent. the other thing is the character's head positioning against a rounded tree. I feel that either the tree can move back away from the character about an inch or the character's chin/cheek should be resting on his clavicle.

Stingy, anal, crabby, poopy, artsy-fartsy comments aside, the shading on the character, especially the clothing, is extremely well done. The lighting is another thing that really gives this image life. Proportions are amazing. I really get a lush foresty feel when I look at this. The crepuscular rays breaking through the trees are a magnificent touch, especially when they contrast against a darker background.

All in all, Me gusta

ah yea, the background was an experiement since I'm not very good at drawing backgrounds from scratch. :hmm: he is however supposed to stand out abit with the outlines since it's the style of drawing I usually use.
hmmm though I see your point on moving the tree abit back, darn I should have noticed that.. thanks for the tip.

ah but thanks for the compliments on the shading! it came out surprisingly good =)
